4.24.2008

Geert CappelaereFREETOWN: NEW PEOPLE CORRESPONDENT: The former SLPP government's commitment to achieving the Millenium Development Goals for education for the children of the Koinadugu District saw it contract a strategic partnership with the United Nations International Children Fund (UNICEF) for the construction of community schools and therefore expand oportunities for education to the children of Koinadugu. This Tuesday, April 22, the UNICEF representative handed over fifty community schools to the APC government in fulfilment of the process that it had started with the SLPP government last year. The schools were all constructed in the Fasewaya Chiefdom in the Koinadugu district.

The schools were handed over by UNICEF Country Representative, Geert Cappelaere. In his speech, he emphasised that this gesture was part of UNICEF's gesture to promoting access to education in inaccessible areas. He explained his delight tha his agency could help in promoting plans for expanding access to education especially in remote areas. He encouraged the community to take advantage of the opportunity by sending their children to school. He emphasised to community leaders why it is very important that “every child in every corner gets access to basic quality education" and he believes that children deserve the gift of education.

The Minister of Education Youth and Sports, Dr. Minkailu Bah, commended UNICEF for this product of this strategic partnership. He thanked the community and asked them to ensure that school materials are at the disposal of their children. He further pledged that the APC will work to pursue the best interests of the children.
