Message from The New People Management Team

We envision an Africa where the tribal affiliations of everyone of us is seen as adding value to the development of Africa instead of being used to marginalize people from fully taking part in the development of our motherland.

The Price and Implications of Our Democracy: Reminding the President

Alimamy Jaiah Kai-Kai.

Well, let’s face it. Before the Sierra Leone Presidential and general Election in 2007, I recall, Mr. Ernest Bai Koroma, now our president Ernest Koroma promised change, a positive attitudinal change that got the whole country singing the tune. The people fell for it, and voted for it or did they? The questionable result of that election still hovers around our village farm yards, schools, colleges, restaurants, streets, markets etc. For the average Sierra Leonean, this change has never been positively felt. Instead, they have been subjected to gross human rights abuses, including but not limited to rape, unlawful beatings of citizens by the police and some politicians, suppression of the press, unlawful arrests and detention without charge, harassment of political opponents, and the blatant interference by the executive arm of government in the affairs of the judiciary. Unemployed youth who were promised the world before the elections now face the grim realities of unemployment as the APC government fails to provide jobs for them. The scourge of disaffection is limitless.

The Flag of Hypocrisy

August 19, 2010

Raynard Jackson

I am amazed that the controversy surrounding the proposed Muslim mosque and community center in New York City at ground zero is still going strong.  America has turned into a country where if you don’t agree with someone, you are painted as a bad person.  This is exactly what is going on in New York City.

Those who oppose the project have lost the legal battle, but now they are attempting to turn it into a political battle.  I find those in opposition full of hypocrisy, especially those in the Republican Party.

That President Ernest Bai Koroma has envisioned a dreamland destiny for Sierra Leone is not in any doubt.  Since his assumption of office, he has demonstrated a steady resolve to move the nation forward and in some areas, appreciable progress is visible. One of the problems however, is that his government now appears to be forgetting today, until tomorrow. Some of his men also believe and often play politics with the lives and future of the people and the nation. They are unable to differentiate between when politics ought to stop for the business of governance and the delivery of development to take prime position.

Countdown To 2012: The Case Against Ernest Bai Koroma.

by Kawusu from Bintumani

With barely two years left for countrywide elections, which include presidential elections, some are already calling for a second term for Ernest Koroma.
In a democracy, everyone has a right to free speech. But with the right to free speech comes the responsibility of choosing a leader on the basis of performance, integrity and fitness for office. This means that deciding on who the next president of Sierra Leone should be requires a sense of democratic responsibility that must hold us to a higher standard of critical analysis relative to the performance and integrity of the incumbent, the integrity and fitness for office of his opponents/challengers and the overall trajectory of developments in Sierra Leone.

APC Must Respect Separation of Power

By Allieu Sesay

National Chairman of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has insisted that the ruling All People’s Congress (APC) government must respect the tenets of separation of powers and the independence of the judiciary.

“We are concerned with and utterly condemn recent blatant interference in the functions of the judiciary. We have received reports of the recent instances of the executive usurping powers of the judiciary by deliberately ordering unlawful arrests and detention of persons, compulsory eviction and destruction of private property and wrongful demand for release of detainees among others,” John Oponjo Benjamin told the New People in an interview this week.
