THE ACHA AFFAIR: SPEAKING WITH MANY VOICES

PUAWUI…DR. SAMA BANYA

The state house announcement itself was not very unequivocal and left unanswered questions at the time; it simply said that it had pleased his Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma to appoint a new Inspector-General and deputy Inspector-General of Police and then gave their names as AIG Francis Munu and AIG Richard Moigbeh respectively. While most of the media referred to the saga as the sacking of Brima Acha the minister of information declared that the man had not been sacked but sent on retirement. It did not matter to the minister that Acha was only 50 and had been in post for under10 years. And as the discussion continued up to last week, the “unusually well informed and very knowledgeable insider on APC and SLPP affairs” the African champion newspaper came out with a headline in its yesterday September6 edition informing its readers “Why Acha was SACKED.”

DO THESE SO-CALLED EDITORS UNDERSTAND THE ISSUES?

PUAWUI…DR.SAMA BANYA

Some pro APC propagandists appear not to really understand some of the issues about which they write, sometimes spreading their confused logic over several pages of their newspapers. How often have I reminded them of Shaki’s adage, to “Engage brain before engaging mouth.’’  If only they carried out a little investigation so as to arm themselves with basic facts it would save them embarrassments in hindsight. Last week it was announced that a Togolese lawyer representing the families of the victims of the Paramount helicopter crash at Lungi airport which had claimed the lives of all 23 passengers on board had issued a writ of summons against the Sierra Leone government. I am not sure how many people were aufait with the legal grounds for the action and the SLBC took pains to get various people concerned with the facts to educate the listening public.

Glen Beck’s Restoring Honor

 Raynard Jackson

September 2, 2010(me and Bernice King—M.L.K.’s daughter)

Originally, I wasn’t going to write about radio talk show entertainer Glen Beck’s supposed “March on Washington;” but, because you, my readers, asked me to comment, I will.

The event was called, “Restoring Honor.”  Its stated purpose was to be a “celebration of America’s heroes and heritage.  So, I have a few questions that I wish Beck would have addressed.  You can only restore that which was lost.  So, what in Beck’s mind was lost and how is he going to restore it?  If it was a “celebration of America’s heroes and heritage,” then why was there no soldier of color participating in any of the activities?  All the soldiers were white men.  It reminded me of watching the Flintstones and the Jetsons cartoons as a kid---not one Black was ever seen in either.  The Flintstones were about the past and the Jetsons were about the future.  So, according to Hollywood, Blacks had no past and we don’t have a future.  Is that what Beck was trying to restore?

HOW QUICKLY PEOPLE FORGET! WINNER’S CAN DO NO WRONG

PUAWUI…DR.SAMA BANYA

The Executive editor of the standard times newspaper has written a number of articles in which he reminds his readers of our unfortunate tendency to forget so very soon.

However his articles are all too often philosophical and never hit the nail on the head. But it is useful that there is someone out there who is sufficiently concerned to remind us of this trait in our society. Stretching over a period of two decades, people were marginalized; human rights abuses were common and corruption was seen as a way of life. Those who got wealthy from corrupt practices were seen as role models; they displayed their ill acquired wealth in the most vulgar way which attracted our religious leaders which led to their invited by our church leaders to attend special services as distinguished grand chief patrons. And all the time we admired and applauded the actions of these men who had amassed their wealth by robbing the nation in a way that made them to feel on top of the world.

Checklist…The Last Ten Days of Ramadan

CULLED FROM IQRA SENSE

In this blessed month of Ramadan, we have now come to the grand finale – the last ten days of Ramadan that are even more blessed than the rest of Ramadan. In it is a night that Quran tells us is better than 1000 months (yes, months – not days).

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

There has come to you Ramadan, a blessed month which Allah has enjoined you to fast, during which the gates of heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the rebellious devils are chained up. In it there is a night which is better than a thousand months, and whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived.” Narrated by al-Nasa’i, 2106; Ahmad, 8769. classed as saheeh by al-Albani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 999.
