The APC Central committee has again met, this time to plan strategies for using the money from the rice sale to import another 2 shiploads of rice just before the local government elections. That rice will be sold at low prices and it will be accompanied by massive APC propaganda that the APC government has finally resolved the problem of hunger in the country, according to inside APC sources. The APC government plans to distribute the rice among their local government candidates who will then sell the rice at a lower price as they campaign for the local govenment elections, sources in the leadership hierarchy of the All Peoples Congress (APC) have revealed. When a political party votes in members of their executive, they normally choose sober minded people who will be able to lead the existing flock and at the same time add even more followers to the party’s ideals.

"SLPP Even Provided Subventions for Freedom of Expression," SLAJ President Demands Answers from the APC Government.

4.27.2008

Philip Neville, Editor of Standard Times and SLJ PresidentFREETOWN: NEW PEOPLE CORRESPONDENT: The President and members of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) Mr. Philip Neville have expressed grave concern about the APC government's refusal to actively subsidise the operations of a free press (as the SLPP did), for promoting lawlessness through vigilante Task Force groups and shielding criminals, and for dragging its feet on amending the Public Order Act of 1965 as they had conitnuously said during the campaign.

Lamenting the fact that the last, brutally repressive APC government too away the rights of Sierra Leoneans to the free expression of their view, he noted that it was with welcome relief that the SLPP government not only restored those rights, but actively supported that freedom with generous annual subventions of Twenty Million Leones (Le 20,000,000).READ MORE

Geert CappelaereFREETOWN: NEW PEOPLE CORRESPONDENT: The former SLPP government's commitment to achieving the Millenium Development Goals for education for the children of the Koinadugu District saw it contract a strategic partnership with the United Nations International Children Fund (UNICEF) for the construction of community schools and therefore expand oportunities for education to the children of Koinadugu. This Tuesday, April 22, the UNICEF representative handed over fifty community schools to the APC government in fulfilment of the process that it had started with the SLPP government last year. The schools were all constructed in the Fasewaya Chiefdom in the Koinadugu district.READ MORE

THE ART OF GOVERNANCE is a Far Cry from the Rhetoric of Opposition.

4.24.2008

Dr. Sama BanyaFREETOWN: DR. SAMA BANYA - PUAWUI: As I write this column the news from the Diamond-rich headquarter city of Kono is not good. I abhor violence, which is one reason why I constantly criticise the APC who demonstrate by their actions that violence is innate in them. Whether as a One-party government, (witness the mayhem and bloodshed throughout the Country in the general elections of 1982 under our 1978 one-party constitution.) or in the award of party symbols, to say nothing of when other opposition parties or the APC's allies like the PMDC are involved in the democratic process. This tendency to perceive violence or brute force as the solution to all problems is reflected among not only the members and supporters but even the security forces under the APC government.READ MORE

CONSPIRATORIAL SILENCE? What Did the International Community Gain By Regime Change in Sierra Leone?

4.24.2008

June Carter PerrySarah MacintoshFREETOWN: MEMUNATU SHERIFF: There is no proof that Sierra Leone’s September 2007 presidential run-off elections were not rigged particularly when the Chief Electoral Commissioner, Christiana Thorpe, has since not been able to prove by way of publishing polling station figures to substantiate her claims of over-voting at 477 stations, a claim she used as the basis for her declaration of Ernest Bai Koroma as President.READ MORE

APC Promises Backfire as APC Thugs Go on the Rampage in Kono.

4.23.2008

Kono MiningNEW PEOPLE - KONO CORRESPONDENT: Vice President Sam Sumana's promises to the thousands of Kono youth who he has been using to brutalise and threaten supporters of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party are back to bite him and the APC with a vengeance. Prior to the elections, the APC had promised the youth that in return for their support, the youth would be allowed to cart away and wash diamondeferous gravel left over from National Diamond Mining Copany (NDMC) and other mining operations in the area. The APC had also stoked discontent by manipulating the youth into attacking mining concessions and operations in the area with the promise that the government would then re-write mining laws granting orginary citizenry and especially the youth access to the diamonds.READ MORE

NOSLINA RESPONDS: NOSLINA Responds: 2008 Awards Process.

Noslina HomeCUMALE FITZJOHN, EDITORIAL DIRECTOR, NOSLINA: The Board of Directors and Executive members of the National Organization of Sierra Leoneans in North America note with dismay the publication in The New People Online Newspaper of April 20, 2008 a series of false, misleading and blatantly malicious allegations pertaining to our 2008 Awards selection process. In the strongest possible terms we jointly and collectively write to refute the several baseless assertions, lies and innuendos that purport to describe our selection process as racist and blinded by some members being operatives of the ruling party in Sierra Leone. Everyone should know that we take serious umbrage to wild and spurious allegations demeaning the quality of our process and our collective decision in granting awards to individuals we collectively deem worthy and meritorious.READ MORE

NOSLINA Awards Lose Value: Rewarding Political Charlatans and Tribal Bigots.

4.20.2008

kABS kANU and APC Presidential confidante, Alpha KanuNEW PEOPLE - KEEN OBSERVER: When the National Organization of Sierra Leoneans in North America (NOSLINA) was created, most people were hopeful that it was going to be above political influences and games. Those high hopes have now been shattered by the latest publication of their honorees. Specifically, many people have questioned the wisdom of NOSLINA honoring people like Rev Kabs-Kanu and Yaya Fanusie. This in my view is the lowest NOSLINA has gone in their ten year existence. Does NOSLINA want to make us believe that these two really deserve such honor? It would be interesting to hear the rationale for such honor to the two people who many folks consider social misfits. While Yaya Fanusi in my view does not deserve to be honored, his excesses which should have disqualified him are less egregious than the so called Rev Kabs-Kanu. Yaya Fanusie is rude, unpleasant and immoral but Kabs-Kanu is vile, a tribal bigot and a down right subversive charlatan whose name should not have been forwarded. READ MORE

Increasing numbers of Sierra Leonean children below age 5 are dying of complications from malnutrition and expensive healthcare, NGOs and medical staff in Sierra Leone report.

Ombudsman, Francis Gabbidon, has been released on bail following his brief arrest at the orders of the country's Anti-Corruption Commission.

Reports indicate that the APC President has instructed the Anti-Corruption Commission NOT TO MAKE PUBLIC Haja Afsatu Kabbah's "written explanation" to the commission. It is unclear why a minister's comment on a public matter must be kept away from the public.

Trade and Industry Minister, Alimamy Koroma, told parliament that his ministry can do nothing about escalating prices for goods in Sierra Leone and he advised Sierra Leoneans to simply "brace up" until the worst is over. Agriculture Minister, Dr. Sam Sesay, said that rice in Sierra Leone is relatively cheap, but that he had also put 141 tractors to work that will mechanise agriculture adequately to increase food production.

50-50 representative, Mrs. Harriet Turay, has argued that because of the haphazard support and outright refusal of the ruling party to support women candidates for the upcoming local government elections, more women may contest the elections as independent.

Sierra Leonean cricket coach, Cyril Panda, blamed the country's loss in the finals of the West/North African region on poor refereeing by Gambian umpire, Johnny Gomez.

Sierra Leone draws 1-1 with Senegal in Freetown. The return leg is in Dakar with the Senegalese coach hopeful for a win.

Sierra Leonean striker, Kei Kamara has scored in both of San Jose EarthquaKe's games in the American Major League Soccer (MLS). He scored the winner against the Colorado Rapids.

Sierra Leone has chosen Liberia's Samuel K. Doe national stadium as an alternative venue in case the national stadium does not pass a FIFA examination.

ANALYSIS: What Ernest Told the TRC and What President Ernest Koroma and the APC Are Doing.

4.17.2008

Dr. Sama BanyaFREETOWN: DR. SAMA BANYA - PUAWUI: On Thursday, it was no coincidence that when the Awareness Times newspaper reproduced Mr. Ernest Bai Koroma's statement to the Truth and Reconciliation Committee, that APC mouthpiece (We Yone) and the pro-government Standard Times newspaper attempted to take attention from the substance of President Koroma's contradictions. Both We Yone and Standard Times, instead, carried front page headlines impugning the character and reputation of one of the finest and most dilligent youngmen in the civil service, Soulay Daramy. Soulay was the State Chief of Protocol at State house under former President Tejan Kabbah; he succeeded Rupert Davies, who had followed Abdul Rahman Wurie. READ MORE

James Sampha Koroma's Thieving Scheme Revealed: Is This President Ernest Koroma's Zero Tolerance Doctrine?

4.17.2008

James Sanpha KoromaFREETOWN: NEW PEOPLE INVESTIGATIVE CORRESPONDENT: Investigative reporters tracking down money and paper trails in order to prove President Ernest Bai Koroma's commitment to "zero tolerance" and "transparency" have unveiled a grand thieving scheme devised by no less a person than the Secretary to the President in the President's own Office, Mr. James Sanpha Koroma. Investigations by The New People indicate that the Secretary to the President is requesting for "self accounting". In other words, "nobody checks how Sanpha Koroma spends money allocated to his office, nobody audits his books, and nobody supervises that spending."READ MORE

What is the Defence Minister Up To? Multiple Girlfriends, 200 Gallons of Fuel Each Week, and What Else?

4.17.2008

Maj(Rtd) Pallor ContehFREETOWN: NEW PEOPLE INVESTIGATIVE CORRESPONDENT: As Guinean soldiers extend their reach within the Yenga area and as other problems fester within the military, Major (Rtd) Pallor Conteh has again drawn stark attention to his own personal indiscretions that have compromised his integrity. At a time when the International Military Assistance and Training Team (IMATT), has invested money and men in re-organising, re-training, equipping, and financing the Sierra Leone military, Maj (Rtd) Pallor Conteh's unprofessionalism is threatening to undo all that good will and good work.

Recent antics by the Defence Minister hearken back to the tin-pot days of crude and untrained soldiering during the early war years. In case the Defence Minister did not know this, the role of the Minister for Defence is not to act as a dorm prefect or as the junior military police officer he was nearly 20 years ago. When he whipped up a media storm by wearing combat fatigues complete with epaulettes and insignia and red beret, one would have forgiven his fashion choice or sheer megalomania associated with middle-age.
