Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves:Ernest Koroma Turns Sierra Leone into a Den for Thieves

Written by  Freetown Correspondent

Our Stories of graft and broad day light robbery by Ernest Koroma and his caboodle is becoming a weekly expectation in Sierra Leone. If it is not about his team swindling millions of dollars from the country’s coffers in the name of buying some rotting ferries, it is about Philip Conteh of the Attitudinal and Behavioral Change Secretariat stealing money meant for programs or the Minister of Defense Paolo Conteh stealing money meant for peacekeeping. The most recent story about theft exploded in the news exposed a carefully chosen group of people who budgeted $25million for a year’s worth of independence celebration.

The 50th Independence Celebration Committee had budgeted $25million for the purpose of celebrating Sierra Leone’s 50th independence anniversary. This committee was initially headed by now dismissed William Konteh who thought it fit to appoint Milly Terry as his personal assistant; Kwame Yankson was appointed as one of the directors while Yeniva Sesay-Sogbeh became the executive Secretary. From the get go, it was clear to the New People that this was a team of enjoyers who were bent on sucking the country dry. For instance, New People is finding it difficult to unearth William Konteh’s previous employment before his brother Richard Konteh, Minister of Trade (who was accused of embezzling money meant for GST receipts) prevailed on Ernest Koroma through the Loko Union to get him the position of Executive Director.

Milly Terry on the other hand was only known for being a serial MC at every “pull na doe” and wedding in USA. Again New People cannot ascertain whether she was even gainfully employed before President Koroma appointed her to the position. In fact Sources close to state house tell New People that Milly Terry was only appointed because she used to MC EBK’s meetings during the 2007 campaign in USA. This is just a cross section of the characters put in charge of organizing the 50th independence anniversary. On the other hand Vickie Remoe a world renowned media personality excused herself from the charade, just as Alie Bangura the SLPP heavy weight refused to be a signatory to the account.  The events of the 50th Anniversary Committee are just a microcosm of how Ernest Koroma is running the country not as a business but as Ali Baba and the 40 thieves. The most recent revelations of the theft of Ali Baba’s thieves are as follows: with William Konteh alone siphoning the sum of $38,000 just for the heck of it so to speak:

17/09/2010 Per diem allowance to William Conteh (Nigeria trip) $5,568
17/09/2010 Contingency (imprest) to William Conteh $10,000
17/09/2010 Per diem allowance to William Conteh (USA trip) $4567
17/09/2010 Contingency (Imprest) to William Conteh $5000
17/09/2010 William Conteh collected $25,135 from the 50th anniversary celebrations budget for per diem and contingency in addition to having collected a salary of $4500 for that same month
17/09/2010 Per diem to Yeniva Sisay $6480
17/09/2010 Per diem Milly Terry $4800 and Per diem to Dr Julius Spencer $4800
22/09/2010 50% advance payment for Toyota land cruiser (V8) to VIMCO ENTERPRISES $36,812
22/11/2010 balance payment to VIMCO ENTERPRISES $36,812
05/11/2010 $16,493 was paid to William Konteh for another trip to Nigeria and to the US for per diem and contingency
$18,467 paid to Yeniva Sisay for per diem and contingency to the US and Nigeria on 05/11/2010
Committee Members who also received per diem for trip to US Kwame Yankson $5900 Milly Terry $5571 Agatha Johnson $2462 = $13933 on per diem
Payment to Dr Julius Spencer's premier media consultancy for fireworks on new years eve $182800

The question on citizens’ lips is that whether Milly Terry and/or Yeniva Sesay ever earned that type of money in two weeks during their long stay in the US. If not why are they being so heartless to suck a poor nation dry?

As was expected, the APC operatives and the Rapid Response Team put together by IB Kargbo the Minister of Information wasted no time in attacking Vickie Remoe for posting the information on her social network site.  The attack was so intense that Vickie Remoe responded that “Me nor to basta pikin for dae work for nation wee order papal deem dae eat”, meaning I am not a bastard to work with remuneration while others steal the country’s resources. Vickie Remoe has since threatened to revoke her Sierra Leonean citizenship because of the rampant theft in Ernest Koroma’s government and the approval such theft receives from supporters of the government.  Vickie has since been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by JB Dauda. New People is following the story very closely as sources tell New People JB intends to threaten her with expulsion should she continue to expose the government in such a manner.
