Sports Minister Snubbed

Written by  Festus Lahai

An attempt by the Minister of Youth Employment and Sport, Paul Kamara, to become a signatory to the National Stadium Management Account has been rebuffed by the Accountant General’s Office.

A memo dated 8th June 2011, which was authored by the Permanent Secretary in the Sports Ministry, on behalf of the Minister to the Accountant General was roundly rejected with a solid reply.

The Accountant General replied that the Minister should nominate a professional head as signatory rather than nominating a minister who is the political head of the ministry.

According to the Accountant General, the Act and Regulation makes no provision for a minister to be a signatory to a bank account.

Minister Paul Kamara has been desperate to replace the substantive signatories of the account in question since he assumed office as minister.

The move by Paul Kamara to replace the signatories with his own has always been met with stiff resistance from the stadium management, which is insisting that the minister has no business becoming a signatory to the account.

Meanwhile, the New People has learnt that Paul Kamara has borrowed the total sum of 130 million leones from the stadium management account from the time he was appointed as minister in December last year to now.

As all of this is happening, all efforts by football stakeholders to resolve the standoff between Paul Kamara and the Stadium Management have so far proved unsuccessful.
