An ardent Sierra Leonean supporter of English Premier League side Arsenal died of a heart attack as result of a goal scored against his side during last weekend's clash with Manchester City. Abdul Aziz Bala, 48, was among a group of football fans who had thronged a prominent viewing centre in a town in the northern Sierra Leonean district of Makeni.

The ill-fated supporter reportedly slumped from his seat when his side conceded a goal. He subsequently died as he was being rushed to hospital. Those who witnessed the incident said Aziz Bala went into a coma just as the Manchester City supporters went into jubilation after their first goal.

“We were all together, arguing for Arsenal,” said one of the dead man's friends. “He was a strong supporter and always challenged those who were against his team,” fellow Arsenal supporter Usman Lahai told Freetown-based ConcordTimes.

Hospital sources said post-mortem result showed he died as a result of heart attack. Meanwhile, the police have detained the owner of viewing centre where the incident occurred. “We want to know if the cinema is registered and whether the environment is conducive to accommodate such a large crowd. Sierra Leone has some of the most fanatical supporters of the English Premier League teams.

And viewing centres are always jam-packed during Premier League matches.
